Frequently Asked Questions

Why Green Valley?

Green Valley was founded in 2000 as a response to the grievances undergone by the local farmers at a time when their produce did not receive a fair price and they were further exploited by middlemen and merchants. Green Valley creates value addition to the farmer's produce by extracting oil from freshly harvested coconuts and by ensuring the producers receive a fair price. When you buy from us, you are supporting a local farmer. We sell quality coconut oil which is free from smoke, sulphur, preservatives, or any chemicals.

What are the attributes of coconut oil?
  • Coconut oil is one of the most stable oils and is highly resistant to rancidity. It is stable because of its high proportion (90%) of saturated fats. It is the unsaturated fats in the common seed oils that are easily oxidized and susceptible to rancidity.
  • It generally has 60% + medium-chain fatty acids.
  • Pure coconut oil has a fresh aroma and taste and is transparent at or above 24 degrees Celsius.
  • Coconut oil solidifies when the temperature drops below 24 degrees Celsius.
  • Coconut oil is mild on the skin and is widely used in the tropics to protect both skin and hair from the harsh effect of the sun as it contains Vitamin E.
  • Coconut oil comes with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-aging properties and can be used for inside-out nourishment.
Why does Green Valley not procure roasted copra from outside to produce coconut oil?

Copra available in the market comes from different groups, including small and big merchants. We do not follow the practice of buying roasted copra from the market. Roasting affects copra's quality and does not remove the moisture content to the level required. The copra is often treated with smoke and might contain Sulphur, a toxic preservative, added as an antimicrobial agent for preventing bacterial and fungal growth. Sulphur restricts lung performance and leads to direct allergenic reactions. Coconut dried directly over the fire in country dryers will be coated with soot and other impurities. Additionally, damaged nuts are not discarded from the copra available in the market, making the copra and the oil extracted from it inferior.

Green Valley procures raw material directly from the local farmers, ensuring them of the right price and transparency in quality testing, weight estimation, and inspection processes. We thoroughly dry the copra through two-step hot air blowing which ensures that copra has only the right amount of moisture which otherwise leads to rancidity and low shelf life. This way, the quality and freshness of the copra is retained

What is the difference between Green Valley’s Coconut Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is extracted from a dried coconut kernel called copra. If it is refined, decolourised, and bleached it would be stripped of all its natural values. Therefore, it is important not to consume hot-pressed coconut oil. At Green Valley, copra is pressed through a cold process expeller, thereby retaining all its original nutrients. Green Valley’s Coconut Oil is ideal for light cooking. It is unrefined and not heated up during the process. However, compared to Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO), it has a reduced content of Lauric Acid, the main active ingredient responsible for the therapeutic effects.

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is extracted from the fresh milk of coconut using cold press, which maintains all the natural constituents, aroma, and antioxidants of the oil. It is non-greasy and is lighter in viscosity. VCO is rich in medium-chain fatty acids and has good cholesterol and almost negligible trans fatty acids. VCO is recommended to be used for daily consumption, oil pulling, baby massage, etc.

What is oil pulling? How often should I do it?

Oil Pulling or Gandusha as it is known in Ayurveda is a highly effective Detoxifying Ayurvedic practice that has been in practice for centuries. The technique involves placing a tablespoon or so of a pure, never blended oil (an organic, unrefined, cold-pressed oil should be used) into your mouth and then swishing and swirling it around, pulling it into the spaces between your teeth, starting with five minutes and building up to an ideal of fifteen to twenty minutes before spitting it out to clean and detoxify oral cavity. There are multiple health benefits associated with the technique which go far beyond simply cleansing the mouth of bacteria. It is both a preventative and curative practice.

Steps

  • One should do oil pulling first thing in the morning. Remember to be on your empty stomach – even before taking any liquids, including water.
  • We recommend using a tablespoon of Green Valley’s Virgin Coconut Oil and 2-3 powdered cloves for oil pulling every morning after waking up.
  • Swish the oil gently and not vigorously in a relaxed manner.
  • The oil ends up turning thin, viscous, and white after 15-20 mts of swishing inside your mouth. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it has reached its "saturation point," and you should spit out.
  • If required, wash your mouth with warm water after spitting out the mix, and you can brush your teeth as usual. Keep in mind that oil pulling is not a substitute for regular brushingFor best results, make it a part of your daily routine. If you accidentally swallow the oil, there is nothing to worry; it will just pass through your system. Symptoms like nausea, a runny nose, or excess mucus formation are very common when you start off practicing oil pulling. This is because of the toxins which are being expelled from your body. These symptoms will last only for a few days; also not everyone experiences these symptoms. Be sure that you are not allergic to coconut oil.

Benefits

Lipids in VCO will cleanse the glands in the mouth and the oral cavity. Coconut oil is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powerhouse, making it ideal for reducing inflammation and oxidation in the mouth. VCO also contains lauric acid, a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) that is incredibly effective at killing the harmful bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. These same compounds may also decrease the amount of plaque that builds up on your teeth, in turn reducing your chance of gum disease. Oil pulling also keeps away bad breath, strengthens your gum, and whitens your teeth naturally.

Where and how to store coconut oil?

As Green Valley’s coconut oils have such low moisture content and no contaminants, it is very stable. A cool and dry place should work fine for storage. Coconut oil will solidify if the temperature drops below 24°Celsius but this is not something to be worried about as its composition and nutritional value does not get altered.

How can you tell if coconut oil has gone bad?

Through smell - Coconut oil usually has a pleasant but subtle, sweet scent. If it smells sour or bitter, then the chances are that it has gone rancid.

Through taste – Good coconut oil has a fresh and sweet aroma and is retained in its natural flavour. Bad coconut oil often develops a sour taste.

Through colour Good coconut oil should be transparent when liquid and milky white when it solidifies. If it has turned yellow chances are it has already expired.

Through appearance - Good coconut oil has a smooth consistency. Your oil is spoiled when it starts to get chunky or if unknown substances are floating on the oil. If you see small patches or dark oil spots in your oil container, it could be mould developing. You'll never know how bad the mould has already contaminated your oil, so it's better to get rid of the oil.

What are the by-products left behind from the coconut oil extraction process?

Coconut oil cake, low-fat desiccated coconut powder, and coconut shell are the three main by-products that get left behind from our production process. To know more about them, please click here.

Why is cold-pressed Virgin Coconut Oil superior to other vegetable oils?

Manufacturers make vegetable oil from oilseeds, legumes, nuts, or the flesh of some fruits. Vegetable oil contains the highest levels of polyunsaturated fats. Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils contain trans fats. The unsaturated fats found in vegetable oils, when heated, tend to oxidize. In this form, they're more dangerous to body tissues. They can trigger inflammation, a known risk factor for making blood vessel plaques unstable enough to cause a heart attack. Trans fats are in various processed foods such as margarine, baked goods, and deep-fried foods.

Cold-pressed Virgin Coconut oil, on the other hand has a particular type of saturated fat called "medium chain triglycerides" (MCTs), which are easily digested and readily burned for energy, much like simple carbohydrates give you an energy boost, but without the spike in blood sugar. This makes coconut oil particularly helpful for people who have trouble digesting fats, athletes, and those with low energy levels. A nice bonus of MCTs in coconut oil is the effect on metabolism, specifically their ability to promote weight loss. In studies where people use coconut oil in place of other cooking oils, weight loss is greater in those using coconut oil. One of the MCTs in coconut oil called lauric acid has other beneficial effects, namely antimicrobial and antifungal properties that help maintain normal gut flora and immune function. Maybe that's why human breast milk is the only other significant source of lauric acid that we know of.

Is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) edible? How much can I consume in a day?

VCO is a functional and dietary food. It contains healthy fats and thus acts as an excellent dietary supplement that can be consumed in raw form. We recommend a general dosage of 1-2 tablespoons per day for an adult on an empty stomach. For infants, use 2- 3 drops. For beginners, we suggest starting with smaller quantities and slowly increasing your intake. If you have any severe health conditions, please consult your doctor for the amount and the time of intake.

Are there any side effects of taking in Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)?

There are no established negative side effects yet, but there could be discomforting experiences that few might experience. VCO has a strong detoxifying or cleansing effect on the digestive system, which may cause an initial increased frequency of loose bowel movement for people who are prone to stomach upset. This was earlier thought to be a negative side effect but is one of the good, though discomforting, effects. The loose bowel movement does not result in dehydration, and the body's successful adjustment happens typically within 1 to 3 days.

VCO increases body energy and metabolism, which may cause, upon start of intake, an increase in heartbeat for some users, increase in blood pressure for some hypertensive users, and warming sensation on the face due to thermogenesis (one of the natural effects of high metabolism) for some users.

It is best to start taking VCO slowly, spread throughout the day instead of a single dose, and gradually increase to the recommended dose to experience its health benefits. Intake of VCO should be discontinued in case adverse symptoms like dizziness are experienced.

The Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) when bought, was liquid, but now it has solidified. Should I be concerned?

No. Coconut oil changes from liquid to solid at around 24 degrees Celsius. The nutritional content of the coconut oil is not altered at all when it changes its form. Warm it up before you apply it on your skin or hair or before consumption.

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is colourless, unlike the oils generally found in the market? Why is that so?

Virgin coconut oil is made from coconut milk, which is extracted from fresh mature coconuts. No heat, chemicals, solvents, or enzymes are used to extract the oil. Hence, Green Valley’s VCO is light, non-greasy, and water-clear above 24 degrees Celsius. More importantly, this delicate form of processing ensures that it retains the fresh coconut flavour, and the micronutrients and antioxidants naturally present in the coconut.

On the other hand, oils made from the dried flesh of inferior coconuts are refined, bleached, and deodorised. To ensure maximum yield, solvents may be used to get out the last vestiges of oil. At this stage, the oil is smelly and discoloured, so it's then bleached (because at this stage, like margarine, it is a grey product) and then dyed to get it back to white (as a semi-solid). As with all oils which are extracted or partly extracted by solvent, there may be an inevitable residue. They may also contain traces of lye and dye. Virgin coconut oil is virtually the only fat that has not been tampered with in some way.

Can Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) be applied on babies?

Virgin coconut oil is unrefined, has more germ-fighting and inflammation-soothing power than any other oil. It is safe to use on the paper-thin skin of premature babies. Medical research has found that using this kind of coconut oil on premature or low birthweight babies helped protect and thicken their delicate skin. Massaging infants with Green Valley's VCO has numerous physical benefits for babies, from alleviating colic to promoting better sleep to boosting the immune system to hydrating their skin.

Most babies will start teething during their first year, typically around six months. Teething can make babies act fussy, lose sleep, and feel downright cranky. Applying coconut oil directly on their gums or on a teething toy can help relieve your baby's discomfort, as coconut oil may help soothe inflammation. As always, check with your child's paediatrician before trying any home remedy.

Is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) refined, bleached, or deodorized? Is any heat applied during the processing?

Green Valley’s VCO is unrefined, unbleached, and un-deodorized. No, we use a cold expeller press process, and at no time during our processing is there external heat applied.

Does Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) help in fighting against COVID 19?

Consuming VCO overall helps in increasing your immunity which is the best way to fight against the Covid-19 virus. Virgin coconut oil is the best natural source of Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) – nearly 60 percent of Green Valley's VCO is MCTs. These are a group of fats that break down easily in our bodies because of their small molecular size. More importantly, they break down to form powerful immune-boosting and energy-giving compounds. Adding VCO to your diet or consuming in raw form is suggested for the best results.

The three major MCTs in VCO are Lauric Acid, Capric Acid, and Caprylic Acid. Lauric acid is what is found in mother's milk and breaks down in our bodies to form a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral, while Capric acid and Caprylic acid are nature's most powerful anti-fungal.

How will I use Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)?

There are many ways to take VCO: drink it directly by the spoonful; mix it with warm food or drinks; use it as a substitute for butter and margarine. To condition skin or cure skin illness, massage it gently on the affected until fully absorbed. To condition hair, cure dandruff, or control hair fall, massage into scalp, rinse after 30 minutes or preferably leave it overnight.

How is Green Valley's Coconut Oil different from other brands?

Green Valley does not buy copra from the market, which contains Sulphur, a toxic preservative, soot and dirt, and damaged nuts making the input inferior. The general industry practice follows that to remove the bad smell of such copra, the copra is roasted, leading to the oil content of the copra getting boiled. The oil is again boiled in the expeller for complete extraction. The consumer receives oil which is boiled twice and then cooled down. Studies prove that oil once boiled and cooled is not fit for consumption and should not be used for cooking. Hot pressing involves extracting oil at high temperatures, and because the acid value rises significantly, it loses most of its natural quality. Boiling the oil in the expeller not only changes the chemical structure of the oil, but in the process, a lot of essential substances like vitamin E, sterols, and carotenoids are lost.

Green Valley dehusks the procured coconuts, dries them thoroughly through hot air blowing, and immediately extracts oil from the copra. Therefore, no preservatives are used in the process. Moreover, Green Valley extracts oil through a screw press (mechanical crushing under high pressure) in its first round. Then the remaining oil is extracted through a cold-press expeller. Thus, coconut oil extracted through semi-cold presses, is retained of its natural physiological and chemical properties and its original taste. Green Valley's products are unrefined, untreated, and pure.
